It is estimated that almost 20% of children aged three and 40% of five-year olds have tooth decay, which are related to toothache, poor sleep during the night and greater difficulties concentrating at school. Besides, a nice smile is the best showcase for the future and it has a lot to do with healthy teeth.
Good dental health requires a lot of care, starting with daily hygiene:
- Brush your child's teeth at least twice a day for approximately two minutes with a medium toothbrush, which should be changed regularly.
- A pea-sized amount of children's toothpaste (containing less fluoride than adult toothpaste) for children between the ages of two and six will be sufficient. After the age of six, you can put 1-2 cm of adult toothpaste on the toothbrush because the child's ability to swallow is now fully developed and he will be able to spit out the paste after rinsing, without swallowing.
- One way to teach a good brushing technique is to tell your child to always brush from the red part to the white part, that is, from the gum to the tooth.
- Teach the importance of brushing teeth before going to bed because there is less saliva flow at night and a greater risk of bacterial plaque.
- As well as daily hygiene, a healthy diet is also important. Below is a series of tips on maintaining a good dental health:
- Eat a healthy and varied diet.
- Limit the consumption of sweets and sugary drinks, especially between meals. If you do eat sweets or drink sugary drinks, rinse your mouth with water to reduce the sugar build up that may remain between the teeth.
- Only drink fruit juices occasionally and avoid nectars due to the amount of added sugar they contain. Whole fruits are preferable because of the added value that chewing brings to oral hygiene.
- The drink of choice at meals should be water, and water or milk between meals.
